Envisage a situation when you are stranded on a deserted island or lost in the wilderness due to the plane in which you were travelling getting crashed, or you somehow missed the sight of your campsite etc. In any case, a man shall be aware of how to get help. You will be no more in the stress of getting lost or panicked with the situation, instead, you would focus on utilising your energy on getting rescued.
To grab the potential rescuer's attention, there are several ways. Each factor works according to the terrain, environment, resources available and day or night time respectively. Not every time phone or GPS works, they may lose signal or stop working when you need. So, let us learn some of the distress signals we should be aware of to use in such cases.
Signal Fire 101
This method is advantageous and used worldwide to signal potential rescuers to ask them for help. If you lack any form of electrical technology, marking through the usage of fire is first, and foremost trick one should apply.
Lighting a fire is very crucial, and one should always take essential security steps as not abiding by them may lead to forest fire and potential risk to your life. While lighting a fire make sure that the wind is calm and there is clear visibility around. It works most efficiently when burned during night time.
Set up fire on a clean land in a shape of the triangle by lighting three fires which is an international distress signal. Look for a location that is highly elevated or is on the edge of the brook.
Smoke
Smoke is another distress signal used. It is more effective during daylight, on days with calm wind and in areas in high contrast with smoke. It fails to work on foggy days. To produce a thick white smoke partially cover smoke with moss, leaves, small vegetation or water. To create black smoke, put some rubber products in the fire.
Mirror
The mirror is the farthest-reaching signal that can reflect daylight up to 10 miles away. The flash created by it can catch the attention of aircraft, watercraft, human on foot and vehicles. Make sure while buying the mirror that it has a sighting lens. If you aren't lucky enough to have sighting lens in the mirror when lost, hold the mirror under your eye and try to focus it on the tip of your stretched finger. Now position your illuminated finger below your target. Now try to move your mirror in upward or downward reaction or in the right to the left direction that will run the beam and may hopefully grab someone's response.
Whistle
To signal by audible means, emergency whistle and firing gunshots are some of the methods. Three sharp and distinct whistle blasts are considered signal of distress to the rescuers present around. gunshots should be avoided as they should be used in case of emergencies and for survival purpose.
Additional Distress Signals
If any of the above tricks don't work, then you should try some of the distinct human-made features to grab rescuers attention. Signals like ‘V' and ‘X' are used to declare and clasp your rescuer's attention to get help to be rescued. You may create these patterns by resources available there.
