7 Common Camping Myths (Easily!) Debunked

There are a lot of people who would love to go camping but have come to believe certain myths about camping which are stopping them.  There are a lot of common myths about camping out there, and not all of them are true.  These myths will often scare people into not camping, which is why you need to know why these myths are not true.

#1 - You Have To Drive Hours To Find A Great Campground

When you have a small family with young children, travelling for long distances to a campground can make the trip more exciting.  However, when you are trying to fit seven people into a car and drive for hours on end, it will be a lot less fun.  Fortunately, you do not have to drive for hours to find a great campground.

Many regular campers will have favourite campgrounds which are less than an hour from where they live.  To find these campgrounds, you should take a look at the areas around the city you live in.  You will be able to find a right mix of campsites that can offer you what you want whether this is a great beach or a state park.

#2 - You Have To Leave Your Electronics

Some people feel that electronics have no place in camping, but other people think that they enjoy camping more when they have their electronics with them.  The problem is that you might not have access to electricity to charge your electronics.  To overcome this, you can get a solar charger and light.

Some solar chargers can charge your electronics during the day and act as a lantern at night.  Of course, if you are going to be taking your electronics, you need to have a waterproof case or a safe place to store them when you are not using them.

#3 - It Is Expensive

Camping will be as expensive as you want it to be.  With a little bit of planning and shopping at the right places, you can quickly start camping with a tiny budget.  A cheap tent, some sleeping bags, and cooking utensils are all that you need.  It is recommended that you start as cheap as possible and only really invest in gear when you know that you love to camp.  Remember, camping is not for everyone.

#4 - You Can Only eat Boring Food.

Your food menu is only limited by your time and imagination.  Many people cook pies, ribs, cakes, and stews while camping.  Of course, making a simple meal is often more comfortable and will give you more time to enjoy your trip.  Some people have had camping trips where they live n cereal and pizza when they are close to a city.  There are a lot of camping recipes that you can look at to get some inspiration.

#5 - Camping Is and Should Be Uncomfortable

If camping were as uncomfortable as some people believe, there would be no campers.  Camping can be very comfortable if you take the time to learn how to camp correctly.  You can make some of your home comforts with you when you go camping and use sleeping pads to cushion the ground.

#6 - You Have To Go To The Bathroom In The Woods

Campgrounds will have public restrooms, and if you are in a state park, these are very nice restrooms.  If you are going to stay at a state campground, you can expect acceptable bathrooms and showers.  It is when you venture to private campgrounds that the state of the restrooms can vary.  Some private campgrounds have toilets that feel like home while others are entirely unusable.

You could also rent a camper if you want to have the luxury of your bathroom.  The only times you will need to go to the bathroom in the woods is when you are camping off the grid.

#7 - You Are Going To Freeze At Night

Overnight the temperatures will drop when you are camping, and you are likely to feel this.  However, there is a lot of gear that you can get which will help you keep the cold at bay.  Some of the gear will include thermal clothing, wool socks, a Mummy style down sleeping bag and a sleeping pad.  All of these items will ensure that you are cosy during the night.

People who come prepared often find that they are too warm overnight because of the gear they have.  If you do face this, you can quickly remove some of your equipment to make yourself more comfortable.  Of course, there is also the option of camping in the warmer months where the drop in temperature will not be too extreme.
